Linda faces a major test of faith when her husband Rob gets diagnosed with dementia. However, she discovered the bright side of the diagnosis and the path that opens up with the chance to grow spiritually. These were words from her husband that carried her forward, even when circumstances become more difficult. Linda chooses to live each day with a positive outlook, inspired by her husband’s faith, and uses that perspective to create a road map for others in similar situations. At the core of this book is a faith-testing journey that grounds her insights in real experiences. This creates an essential read for those seeking guidance, hope, and spiritual growth during times of struggle, illness, and specifically, dementia diagnosis.

Author Linda Knebel Pruden successfully creates an essential read for caregivers seeking understanding and grace. Her experiences and outlook will help others in similar shoes feel seen and supported. The book focuses on her facing the scary reality of diagnosis and how she took her first steps navigating the unknown world ahead. However, there are moments that address the realness of the situation and the heartbreaking way her reality changed, such as the moment her husband forgot how to eat a biscuit. What makes this book stand out is the love in which Pruden writes about her husband, including moments that allow you to connect with. She even incorporates a brief interview with him at the end that occurred after he was first diagnosed and the positive outlook he had on the situation. You also see how it impacts her and how her life changes, specifically with what she gives up. But the book isn’t about her being self-sacrificing or regretful, but about the love she has for her husband and the joy she chooses to find.

Ultimately, this is about facing the unknown with positivity, even when it’s grim, which is a unique perspective that you don’t see often. Even in times of the most struggle, Pruden focuses on finding the beauty in these painful times, and shares what she has learned in each chapter. You see how she came to let go of expectations, realizing that there are things that are out of her control. But the way she writes makes you feel like she embraced this and by doing so found an inner peace that some will find comfort in. Pruden uses an interesting approach in her writing, which explores how she feels that being a caregiver has made her into a better person. You can feel this in the insights she shares at the end of each chapter in sections called thoughts for caregivers. In these she speaks directly to caregivers with a tone that feels like she’s taking you by the hand and helping you take the first steps forward.

There are also questions at the end of the book, which can help with deeper insights, reflection, and familial discussion. These focus on exploring your strengths, finding what brings you joy in your new circumstances, how you’ve changed as a person following diagnosis, and more. These questions are rooted in personal growth and spirituality, with her faith-testing experiences helping her find a deeper meaning for her life. It will appeal to those seeking a resource that is about reflection and support, and while it doesn’t offer a fix-it solution, it does provide solace. It will help other caregivers and loved ones feel less alone. An honest resource about finding joy in small moments and peace in faith-testing circumstances, From Fear to Peace explores positivity, joy, and faith following the dementia diagnosis of a loved one, which comes from real insights and experiences.
